  • David Wylie - Agriculture
    Scottish Agricultural College, Aberdeen
    Hannah Wain, November 2006
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
David Wylie chose SAC as the course provided the right balance of academic and practical for his future career aspirations in the advisory/consultancy sector. "I enjoyed livestock subjects, particularly breeding. There are many new developments in this field and much of the research is being conducted by SAC meaning our studies are right up-to-date! The 'looking beyond the farm gate' aspects of modules such as Agrifood Business and Marketing are good as I want to learn about how the whole food chain operates rather than just focussing on production agriculture. We have excellent visits to relevant businesses in this sector."

"I left school with five highers and one Advanced Higher. I chose SAC as I liked being associated with Edinburgh University. I knew of SAC due to my agricultural background and liked the idea of studying in a smaller institution where you would know everyone. I also thought it would be fun, with a good social life! The animal science modules are very enjoyable - getting onto farms and research institutes for practicals is great. I also enjoyed the human and mammalian physiology studied at the University. I enjoy the practical elements of the course. I don't know what I will go on to do. Possibly something with livestock business management or animal welfare and disease."

  • A great course!
    Learning Curve Home Study
    Gordon, January 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
I'm half way through studying Garden Design with Learning Curve (I'm also doing their RHS level 2). I'm really enjoying the course (the RHS I find more hard work but I guess that's because of all the science). The course material is comprehensive and the books are excellent. I'm also lucky enough in both courses to have keen tutors who are always there if I have any questions or problems. I find this way of studying really suits me because I work long hours, but you do need to be motivated to stick at it. But having good tutors is a big help too. I'd definitely recommend either of these courses.

  • Be a Garden Designer?
    Capel Manor College
    M., March 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
The course was well run and fun but very intensive, it required a good 1-2 day of 'homework'( it was a 1 day a week course) to set the best from it. The homework built on the college based work + very much developed a passion for plants and design+turnout doubt could be a life changing experience. It was very 'hands on' so stimulated both physically+intelectually.

  • A fascinating and enjoyable course
    Keele University
    Melanie, May 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
The tutors undoubtedly knew their onions, and communicated their passion for beekeeping as well as their expertise. The course is aimed at total novices to beekeeping, but we all left full of enthusiasm and confidence to get started with our own bees.
    Student facilities ****
The classrooms we used were perfectly average, neither ultra-comfortable nor horribly grim. But the accessibility of the hives for hand-on experience, and the provision of veils, bee suits and other equipment added immensely to the experience.
    Social life *****
Although this two-day course is intensive, there was still opportunity for chatting with other students over tea and biscuits and at lunchtimes. I would have appreciated some kind of "icebreaker" at the beginning to find just a little about the other students and perhaps their previous experience with bees (it's easy to think you're the only complete "noob" in the class). We had a lot of fun and laughs, and several of us swapped addresses at the end of the final day.

"Re: Animal Health Care Course Ag361. I thoroughly enjoyed my course and found it to be most comprehensive and thorough, encompassing all aspects of animal care both domestic and in the farming environments. The course was clearly defined and simple to follow. Tutor's comments most helpful and understanding & constructive. Return of assignments within a short time assured continuance of interest. I would recommend a course with A.C.S. to anyone considering undertaking one." - Jo

  • Animal Management - an awesome experience!!
Animal Management Level 3 National Diploma
    Bicton College
    Anon, June 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
You don't need to know very much at all about animals when you start and the course goes at a pace to suit everyone. I won't lie by saying it is quite hard as there is a lot of work but then it is an A level equivalent qualification. Each lecturer teaches in their own way and some are fantastic and some are great! They really do know what they are talking about though. I am going on to do a foundation degree in the same subject and I feel that the course has readied me for the next level! I have increased my knowledge of small animals greatly.
    Student facilities *****
The lecture rooms are quite small but big enough for the class. There are a variety of different lecture rooms throughout the campus. Some old and some more modern. The practical facilities such as the Animal Care Unit is a really good asset to the course. There are a wide variety of animals to handle and learn about. There is also a farm with many animals. The IT sources are brilliant as there are many computers and wireless internet is even available in student accomodation so you can have access 24/7!!
    Social life *****
All the students in my group have been treated as individuals and there are good relationships between the staff and the students. My group have really bonded well and we feel like a small family!! There is more females than males and the age range is from 16 - 30!!! We all get on well though. Most of us chill out together in the day or work in the library in small groups. Most of us will be keeping in contact.

This is a really good course. The pace of the course suits everyones abilities too! I won't lie by saying that it isn't hard as there are a lot of assignments but then it is an A level equivalent course! You don't have to know very much at all about animals as a lot of information is covered on the course! The lecturers really know what they are talking about and most are enthusiastic! The course is a lot of fun because the staff and the students together make it so. I am going on to do a foundation degree in animals management and welfare and I feel that this course has readied me for this.
    Student facilities *****
There are a few different styles of lecture room. There are those that are small but big enough for the group and there are a few huts but they are in good condition. The practical facilities are great and there is such a wide variety of animals in the animal care unit. It is great to be able to handle exotic animals as well as common pets and to learn different things about them too.
    Social life *****
All the students on my course have been treated as individuals and there are great relationships between the students and the lecturers! Our group have got on so well through this course and we feel like a small family! There are more females than males and our classes are the right size to enable everyone to learn adequately. Some of us chill out after classes in the social area or study together in the library. Most of us will be keeping in touch.
  • The Time Of Your life
Animal Management Level 3 National Diploma
    Bicton College
    Anon, June 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
The things i have been taught at Bicton are relevent to what i want to do as a career as i have always loved animals and like learning about them. I have learnt alot that ididnt know before about animals and different species and how to cair for them. also it has taught me how to properly write assignments and take responcability for my own life. The course is well paced as as it give you time to do the assignments and re-submit the if you dont get it firs time. the work is sometime hard but it is good as it tests you to see how well you cope with the work and it gets easer as you get into the flow of it. The course is a little hard if you dont know anything about animals but most of the people who start the course know the bacics and that is enough. All of the teachers are Awesome and really helpfull with getting the work done on time, they help you in their spare time and take the time in lessons to help you understand it better. They also are understanding when assignments are late if there is a valid excuse and are really supportive if there are some problems you need to talk about. The course is really cool and i feel that i am ready to go into the animal care industry for a job, i have learnt alot while i have been hear and have loved every minute.
    Student facilities *****
There are many classrooms in the college and alot of them have computers in them so work can be done in the lesson. The course has alot of practical sessions and alot of theory so there is a good variety of theory and practical. The animal care unit is really cool as there are many animals that are not usually seen very often. You learn how to feed tham and on what and how to clean them out which is usefull if you want to get them as a pet. There are lots of animals i have become attched to and wish to get them as a pet when i have left. There are alot of computers in the college and an unlimited internet connection in all of the on site accomadation so the internet can be accessed all of the time. This is really usefull for people who want to do work in the evenings and there are also computer rooms open arround the college.
    Social life *****
The other people in the course are really friendly. The staff are awesome and are always there is help you when you need it. There are more women than men in the class but I don't think this really makes a difference. I meet up with friends in the social area almost every night and it is really nice to just chill out at the end of the day. I'd like to keep in touch with all my friends that I have made.

Excellent place to learn about horticulture. All teaching and non-teaching staff are fun to work with. They all make the learning experience rewarding. I got more than what I expected. I was a complete beginner but I never felt like that. When I left I knew where I am going next...

Classrooms were funny but appropriate for the course-work.

Good sized student bar to chill out. Students organised dinners and parties all the time. Went out lot of times.
