  • Practical Course
    Cardiff University
    Robbie, November 2006
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
This was a very practical course. There were a lot of visits to the workshop during the first year and this helped me understand the principles of Industrial Machines such as the Lathe. From the second year, there were several industrial visits. My most memorable was the visit to British Steel Plant (by then already known as Corus, I think!) at Port Talbot. There was also emphasis on the business context of engineering. Law and Accountancy were also thrown in. This has helped me a great deal in my current job. Not only am I competent to handle the engineering aspects of my job, I also help the commercial department in adjudicating tenders in regard to cost and legal implications. The Mechanical Engineering Department was constantly ranked in the top five when I was there and thus there were a lot of employment opportunities in Engineering for those that chose to pursue Engineering as their profession. My department was only two minutes walk from my Student Accommodation. And the City Centre was a stone throw away from my Department. Cardiff is a lively and elegant cosmopolitan. It has the excitement of a vibrant city and tranquility of the nearby cost and countryside. The Millennium Stadium is right in the city centre for all sports fans. The Welsh are some of the most passionate supporters anywhere in the world especially when International Rugby is being played!

I started this course, after a Gap year after high school. I thought that being a year older I would not fit in to my tutor group. But on the day of enrolement within 20 mins I was laughing my head off. This is a wicked place, and if in doubt, i think you sjould spend a day, you'll see that this is a good place to learn and have fun. Big up MANCAT!

  • Great all round experience
    University Of Leicester
    Andrew, March 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
Engineering at Leicester has been a really worthwhile experience so far. I came expecting to learn all the boring engineery stuff - and I have, but I've go so much more out of it. Most of all, I used to hate public speaking and writing. Leicester University has given me so many options to improve my skills, and now when I go to an interview, I look forward to giving a presentation 'cos I know I can do it. Easy marks. The top jobs don't care what university you're from. They have such a detailed application process so being able to give a good presentation or write a 250 word description of your proudest achievement is much more important. Leicester has given me a very enjoyable experience and put me in a position to go as high as anybody from any other university.

  • Brilliant fun and Informative
Electrical Maintenance Skills - Industrial Certificate of Competence
    Technical Training Solutions
    David, June 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content ****
This is electrical maintenance taught with lots of enthousasam and passion. The tutors are all from industry with tons of experience. They explain what the course objectives are, and guide you through the technical stuff with the help of practical exercises and brilliant course notes.
    Student facilities ****
Each student had a wide range of industrial equipment to use, which made the course real fun. I never thought I woud be wiring up three phase motors and starters in different configuration within a few days, but the instructor was great. The emphersis was on safe working practices, and the equipment used for the training gave us all confidence. The classrooms were light and had plenty of space, and the lunches that were provided were really good too.
    Social life ****
There were seven other students on the course, all with different working backgrounds, and this added to the course experience. We were all able to give examples of our own work practices and problems during the course.

    Electrical Installation Theory Part 1 Year 2 C&G 2330
    Stockton Riverside College
    Sam, June 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
I enjoy the course very much. I think it is tought at a reasonable pace and there is always time for a re-cap. I like the practical side of things and the teachers explain things very well. We get the work that needs to be done and we carry it out in a safe and fashionable manner.
    Student facilities *****
Its very modern. This is the first yr in the new building and we are * test driving it *. the facilities are excellent and its very clean. there is enough booths for everyone in the class to have there own. there is enough materials to go around for everyone and there is a tool box for everyone in the class. We tidy the work shop after every lesson to keep it nice for the other students.
    Social life *****
Most of the other students are excellent. There is always a good atmosphere in the classroom and workshop. The teachers are always up for a laugh with us and they always take parts in events that the class organises like football and party's. Its very good and i enjoy every minute of it.

    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
The course is spaced over 3 years. Split into 3 six month spells at sea, and 3 six month spells at college. The course is challenging but interesting and fun. Just about all entrants are beginners, knowing nothing about engineering at all. The teachers are usually ex-seamen themsleves and are brimming with experience and enthusiasm. The course is made up of various subjects. Maintenance, science, electrics, welding, mathematics.

Modern classroom facilities. You stay on a campus which has bunkbed rooms and shower blocks. The college has an engineering department with amazing facilities (engines, workshops etc). Other shared facilities include a library and large I.T Department.
